Job Description

The Director of University Wellness & Recreation will primarily program and supervise in four major areas of that department: The Wellness Center, Activity Center, Pool, and Recreational Sports. These areas provide needs for a student body of 1100 and 200 faculty, staff, and administrators. The position oversees (2-3) student supervisors, (13) work-study students, (4) interns, (15) referees, and (2) lifeguards. This person must be able to work with students, faculty, and staff individually and in teams to better promote healthy lifestyles and competitive interaction with others. This person must be able to enforce published policies and regulations.

Essential Duties Summary

Job Function Areas
a. Recreational Sports
• Develop intramural schedules for approximately 10-14 intramural sports.
• Prepare policies for teams and individuals.
• Schedule games and prepare tournament brackets.
• Train and supervise student supervisors.
• Oversee training of referees and student workers.
• Supervise intramural games.
• Purchase, inventory, and maintain proper equipment.
b. Pool/Wellness/Activity Centers
• Supervise everyday operations, including scheduling of lifeguards and Wellness Center staff.
• Monitor quality of water, chemical levels, change and clean filter system, order chemicals.
• Train lifeguards in pool safety procedures.
• Schedule rentals and coordinate staffing for pool parties and outside groups.
c. Program Development
• Co-coordinate campus-wide Health Fair promoting healthy lifestyles.
• Develop an Outdoor Adventure Program with appropriate activities for McMurry students focused on outdoor recreation and experiential learning.
• Collaborate with appropriate University Offices (Human Resources, Athletic Department, etc.) to maintain and oversee a Wellness Program for Faculty/Staff /Administrators.
• Develop and co-sponsor programs around the wellness model with religious life/campus ministry, health services, counseling, student engagement, athletics and other departments across campus, including programs focused on alcohol, drugs and substance use/abuse.
d. Teaching/Instruction
• Teach (2) one-hour Fitness for Living activity classes per semester.

Administrative
• The Director is a member of the Student Affairs professional staff and works to develop opportunities for student growth and effective department operations.
• The Director will be required to work evenings and some weekends for Intramurals and other Wellness events as needed.
• Assist with inter-departmental projects.
• Participate in University and departmental committee work and projects, providing leadership when appropriate.
• Assist with the coordination of student awards ceremonies.
• Monitor operations budgets for each area mentioned above.
• Promote enjoyment, competition, and fellowship in Intramurals.
• Complete other projects and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of Students & Campus Life.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in health, wellness, physical education, recreational sports, or related field with a minimum of one to two years experience in these areas. Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and understanding of assessment and research methods helpful. Ability to work evenings and weekends is mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior supervision of paraprofessional staff at university level or equivalent and strong skills in written and oral communication, group facilitation, and program presentation preferred.

Prefer lifeguard instructor, CPR, first-aid, and CPO (Certified Pool Operator) certification or ability to complete certification requirements.
