Job Description

Assistant Chaplain/Assistant Director of Religious & Spiritual Life/Collegiate Advisor for St. Paul United Methodist Church.

The Assistant Chaplain, a 29 hour non-exempt position, is responsible for a number of specific program areas in the Department of Religious & Spiritual Life at the University. As a part of the Religious and Spiritual Life Professional Staff, the Assistant Chaplain interacts with a student body of approximately 1,100 students, as well as 200 university faculty, staff and administration. The highest standard of professionalism is expected at all times. The Assistant Chaplain reports to the University Chaplain.

Essential Duties Summary

I. Student-Worker Supervision, Development, and Evaluation

1. Serve as mentor and direct supervisor for the Campus Ministry Leadership Team.
2. Proactively delegate daily responsibilities and projects as needed.
3. Schedule and conduct regular staff meetings in the absence of the chaplain.

II. Program Development

1. On-Campus
a. Develop an overall strategy for starting, maintaining and expanding small groups on campus that facilitate the spiritual awareness of the McMurry community.
b. Seek innovative methods for the expansion of religious & spiritual life into every social sphere of the university student community (i.e.-social clubs, athletic teams, etc.)
c. Participate in the planning and leadership of weekly chapel services.
d. Provide pastoral care as needed.
2. In the Churches
a. Develop an overall strategy for strengthening McMurry’s relationship with the United Methodist Church, as well as other church bodies, through scheduling, organizing and executing a McMurry presence in local congregations.
b. Serve St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Abilene, Texas for 10 hours per week with duties as assigned.
3. Missions
Coordinate the development and implementation of local, domestic and international mission and service programs for the university community.
4. Special Events
Coordinate religious and spiritual life special events including the Campus Ministry Fall Retreat.

III. Religious & Spiritual Life Website Maintenance

1. Keep the Religious & Spiritual Life website updated with current information and events through online calendar and posting of relevant information.
2. Take photographs with a digital camera of all new staff members, the Campus Ministry Team, and other events as needed and edit the photographs with appropriate photo editing software to prepare them for posting on the website.
3. Develop an overall strategy for the creation of an online community through an interactive website including: online podcasts, blogs, discussion rooms, etc.
4. Coordinate with the Division of Information Services to establish proper protocol for website maintenance

IV. Confidentiality

1. Maintain professional integrity and confidentiality at all times. All information is confidential information unless it is considered “directory information” (phone numbers and addresses).
2. Breach of confidentiality shall be grounds for immediate dismissal.

V. Other job duties as assigned by the Chaplain.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with some experience in church-related ministry required. Candidate must be in the process of exploring the option of vocational ministry and must be committed to the mission of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. As McMurry is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, applicants who are United Methodists with an appreciation for ecumenical and interfaith understanding will be given top priority. Must demonstrate strong administrative abilities, proficient written and oral communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal and group facilitation competence.
